Checked September 2026 against the school districts' own sites. Attendance zones follow street addresses, not town names — always confirm a specific address with the district before you buy or rent.

How the Columbia area is laid out

Columbia sits where the Broad and Saluda rivers meet to form the Congaree. The suburbs fall into four broad directions:

  • West, across the rivers (Lexington County): Cayce, West Columbia, Lexington.
  • Northwest, toward Lake Murray: Irmo and Chapin.
  • North and northeast (Richland County): Blythewood and the Northeast Columbia corridor.
  • East: Forest Acres, and further out along I-20, Elgin and Lugoff in Kershaw County.

Each area is served by a different public school district, which is often the deciding factor.

The suburbs, one by one

Lexington

Direction: west, along I-20 and US-378. Schools: Lexington County School District One (which also serves Gilbert and Pelion).

Lexington is the county seat of Lexington County, with a busy town centre and quick access to the south shore of Lake Murray. Read our Lexington notes.

Irmo

Direction: northwest, along I-26 toward Lake Murray. Schools: Lexington-Richland School District Five.

Irmo is close to the Lake Murray Dam walkway, Saluda Shoals Park and Harbison State Forest. See our Irmo notes.

Chapin

Direction: further northwest on I-26, on the north side of Lake Murray. Schools: Lexington-Richland School District Five (its Chapin attendance area).

A smaller town with a lake setting and a longer drive into downtown.

Blythewood

Direction: north, along I-77. Schools: Richland School District Two, which also serves Dentsville, Woodfield and most of Arcadia Lakes.

Richland Two is one of the fastest-growing districts in the state, with more than 28,000 students (richland2.org).

Northeast Columbia

Direction: northeast, along Two Notch Road and I-77, near Fort Jackson. Schools: mostly Richland Two. See our Northeast Columbia notes.

Cayce and West Columbia

Direction: directly across the Congaree from downtown. Schools: Lexington County School District Two, headquartered in West Columbia.

The closest suburbs to downtown, with riverwalks on the west bank (see our Three Rivers Greenway guide). See our West Columbia notes.

Forest Acres

Direction: east of downtown, along Forest Drive. A small city of its own. Schools: mostly Richland One, with small sections in Richland Two — check the address. See our Forest Acres notes.

Elgin and Lugoff

Direction: east along I-20, in Kershaw County. Schools: Kershaw County School District, which runs Lugoff-Elgin High School.

Further out, with a longer commute but easy access to Camden.

What to check before you choose

  • The exact school zone. Use each district's own school locator for the address.
  • Your commute at rush hour. I-26 through Irmo and the I-20/I-26 interchanges are the usual bottlenecks — drive the route at the time you would travel.
  • Flood maps. Much of the area sits near the three rivers; check the FEMA flood map for the address.
  • School report cards. Compare schools on screportcards.com.
