About gyms in Columbia, SC

South Carolina has a law written for gym contracts. The Physical Fitness Services Act (SC Code chapter 44-79) covers prepaid or credit contracts that run over three months or cost over $200. You can cancel by certified mail before midnight of the third business day after signing. You can also cancel later after death, a doctor-certified permanent disability, or a move more than 50 miles from the gym if it cannot offer an equivalent location.

The law also caps most contracts at 24 months, with up to 36 months for a long-established gym approved by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Renewal options are limited to 12 months, and cancelling the contract cancels any automatic renewal. In most cases, gyms selling these contracts must also post a bond with the state or show financial responsibility. If you would rather train outdoors, the Three Rivers Greenway, Saluda Shoals Park and Congaree National Park are free or cheap, and free things to do in Columbia lists more.

How to choose

  • Ask for a free trial class or day pass before committing.
  • Read the cancellation terms — notice period, fees and whether you must cancel in person or in writing.
  • Ask whether coaches or trainers hold a recognised certification.
